Indian Institute of Technology Ropar

Overview

IIT Ropar was set up by MHRD in the year 2008. In its first year, the students were accommodated and taught in the premises of its mentor IIT, IIT Delhi. The next year, the institute started functioning from its transit campus at Rupnagar.

Academics
IIT Ropar currently provides B. Tech in three streams, viz Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. It also offers Ph.D. in six disciplines.

The IIT Ropar Central Library is spacious (about 4500 sqft), well lit, and well-ventilated. Apart from the reading material prescribed for each course offered at the institute, the library also houses a growing collection of research monographs, reports, multi-volume reference works, dictionaries, encyclopedias, handbooks, and so on. In addition, the library also facilitates access to a number of journals through its participation in consortia. The library staff members are currently working towards automation of user services and other aspects of information management, and setting up a digital library and e-resource center.

The institute encourages its faculty members to initiate research work and provides an initiation grant and also the basic facilities for its sustenance. It also encourages faculty members to establish collaborative research ventures with other research labs and the industry. In this regard, the institute is keen to establish a Central Research Facility. IIT Ropar has signed a number of MoUs with various universities in the United Kingdom. It has also had several visitors from universities abroad with a view to establish partnerships in research and teaching.

The institute offers Merit-cum-Means scholarship to about 25% of the students. IIT Ropar also provides Institute Free Studentship to 10% of the students on the basis of means only. Besides these, the institute also offers merit prizes and certificates to the top students in each batch.

At present, the transit campus has excellent facilities for several sports, including a cricket field, three lawn tennis courts, a football field, a hockey field, a gymnasium, a basketball court, badminton courts, an athletics track, table tennis room and also a number of facilities and ground for several athletic events. The institute also encourages its students to participate in inter-IIT sport events and other competitions. Space for recreational and creative activities is also available.

To enhance the students' confidence, leadership qualities, attitude, management, communicative and creative skills, the institute insists on electing student representatives as members of various councils. In keeping with the tradition of IITs, this initiative also provides the student community with an opportunity to exercise their autonomy in a responsible manner.

The students, in order to pursue their interests in a variety of domains, have formed the following societies: Society for Publication and Communication Skills Development, Music Society, Dance Society, Dramatics Society, Society for Literary Activities, and Computer Games Society.

About

Rupnagar or Ropar is a town and a municipal council in the Rupnagar district of Punjab. Ropar is a 21 metre high ancient mound overlaying the Shiwalik deposition on the left bank of the river Satluj where it emerges into the plains. It has been witness to six cultural periods or phases since the Harappan times to the present.

Ropar is characterised by general dryness, hot summers from March till the end of June, and bracing cold winters from November to February. The temperature ranges from minimum of 4 °C in winter to 45 °C in summer. It receives most of its rainfall from June to September.

Ropar is known for the four gurudwarwas, the Takhat Sri Keshgarh Sahib, the Gurudwara Parivar Vichhora Sahib, the Gurudwara Bhatta Sahib and the Gurudwara Sadabarat. Ropar's main attraction though is the Bhakra Nangal Dam. It is one of the highest straight gravity concrete dams in the world. Water sports in Gobind Sagar have been added to make it a good tourist resort.

Ropar is well connected with all the major cities of Punjab and to National Capital. The nearest major railway station and airport are both at Chandigarh, which is 46 km away.
