Indian Institute of Technology Ropar

IIT Ropar was set up by MHRD in the year 2008. In its first year, the students were accommodated and taught in the premises of its mentor IIT, IIT Delhi. The next year, the institute started functioning from its transit campus at Rupnagar.

IIT Ropar currently provides B. Tech in three streams, viz Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. It also offers Ph.D. in six disciplines.

The IIT Ropar Central Library is spacious (about 4500 sqft), well lit, and well-ventilated. Apart from the reading material prescribed for each course offered at the institute, the library also houses a growing collection of research monographs, reports, multi-volume reference works, dictionaries, encyclopedias, handbooks, and so on. In addition, the library also facilitates access to a number of journals through its participation in consortia. The library staff members are currently working towards automation of user services and other aspects of information management, and setting up a digital library and e-resource center.

The institute encourages its faculty members to initiate research work and provides an initiation grant and also the basic facilities for its sustenance. It also encourages faculty members to establish collaborative research ventures with other research labs and the industry. In this regard, the institute is keen to establish a Central Research Facility. IIT Ropar has signed a number of MoUs with various universities in the United Kingdom. It has also had several visitors from universities abroad with a view to establish partnerships in research and teaching.

The institute offers Merit-cum-Means scholarship to about 25% of the students. IIT Ropar also provides Institute Free Studentship to 10% of the students on the basis of means only. Besides these, the institute also offers merit prizes and certificates to the top students in each batch.

Campus Life

The IIT Ropar campus has four hostels: 3 for boys and 1 for girls. All the hostels have adequate facilities. Shops, water coolers, washing machines, high speed internet connection through both Wi-Fi and LAN, common rooms with amenities for recreation, etc. are some of the in-house resources available in the hostels.

At present, the transit campus has excellent facilities for several sports, including a cricket field, three lawn tennis courts, a football field, a hockey field, a gymnasium, a basketball court, badminton courts, an athletics track, table tennis room and also a number of facilities and ground for several athletic events. The institute also encourages its students to participate in inter-IIT sport events and other competitions. Space for recreational and creative activities is also available.

To enhance the students' confidence, leadership qualities, attitude, management, communicative and creative skills, the institute insists on electing student representatives as members of various councils. In keeping with the tradition of IITs, this initiative also provides the student community with an opportunity to exercise their autonomy in a responsible manner.

The students, in order to pursue their interests in a variety of domains, have formed the following societies: Society for Publication and Communication Skills Development, Music Society, Dance Society, Dramatics Society, Society for Literary Activities, and Computer Games Society.

Zeitgeist is the annual cultural fest of IIT Ropar. Born in 2010, Zeitgeist established itself as one of the biggest student festivals in Punjab through the successful organisation of the events, workshops and cultural performances.
