Roorkee, also known as Roorkee Cantonment, is one of the country's oldest cantonments. Located between the Ganges and the Yamuna, present day Roorkee is famous for its hundreds of industries: Manufacturing, Importing & Exporting, Surveying & Nautical Instruments.

Due to its landlocked position and proximity to the Himalayas, Roorkee faces an extreme continental climate. Summers from late March to early July, monsoons with torrential rainfall from late July to October and freezing winters from December characterize the climate here.

Roorkee has its share of places to hangout. While the Boat Club, Himalayan Eco Park and areas along the Ganga Canal prove to be soothing for the nature-lovers, shopping complexes such as the Vishal Mega Mart and Shiv Complex and eateries including Pizza Hut and Dominoes are hotspots for the younger generation. Also, the pilgrim centres of Haridwar, Rishikesh, Badrinath and Kedarnath and tourist attractions of Dehradun and Mussoorie are readily accessible from Roorkee.

Roorkee comes under Northern Railway and is connected to major cities either directly or through Dehradun or New Delhi. Though the nearest airport is the Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, the preferred one is Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi is more often used by the people. Roorkee also has the NH-58 passing through it.
