Indian Institute of Technology Patna

Overview

IIT Patna was established by an act of parliament in August 2008. It is one of the eight new IITs. The mentor Institute is IIT Guwahati.

Campus
Presently, it is operating from a transit campus located in Patliputra colony, about 5 km from Patna railway station. The permanent campus is expected to come up within the next two years at Bihta, a suburb of Patna.

Academics

The transit campus has sufficient basic modern infrastructure required to run B.Tech programs in Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. The transit campus has five buildings: a four storey main building, a two storey science block, a two storey STPI building, and two other buildings housing the Mechanical Engineering Workshop and Electrical Engineering Workshop.

IIT Patna has signed MoU with the University of Houston, University of North Texas and Louisiana State University in USA for undergraduate students exchange, research collaboration etc. The Institute also provides Merit-cum-Means Scholarships to B.Tech students on merit basis.

Campus Life

There are three boys' hostels which can accommodate about 400 students. The construction work for the fourth hostel is expected to start soon and hopefully that will be ready by July 2012. The hostels are located very close to the Institute main building. The girl students are accommodated in rented flats in a nearby locality. They are provided transport facility for commuting to the Institute building.

For recreation and entertainment of the students, the hostels have facilities for indoor games such as Table Tennis and Carom. It also has a TV room with cable connection. To keep the students fit and healthy, a well equipped gymnasium is also provided in the hostel. A new building for gymkhana is also coming up and is expected to be ready by July 2011. A basket ball court inside the hostel premises has also been constructed. The hostel wardens reside in rented flats situated within about 500 meters from the boys' hostels

IIT Patna gymkhana is fully functional. The students have organized their annual function which is called Anwesha'11. During this techno-cultural extravaganza, they had several events.

About

Patna is capital of Indian state Bihar. The city straddles the rivers Ganga, Sone, Gandak and Punpun. In June 2009, the World Bank ranked Patna in second place in India, after Delhi, in terms of the ease of starting a business.

Patna has a humid subtropical climate.The Summers in Patna is dry and warm and the temperature can go up to 43 °C during the daytime. The winters in the city are quite cold with temperature dropping down to 5 °C.

Patna has a rich tradition of culture and history. The major tourist attractions in Patna are: Agam Kaun, Patna Planetarium, Patna Museum,Golghar. Some of important nearby places in Patna are Bodh Gaya, Nalanda, Rajgir, Vaishali.

Patna is well connected to even most of the normal cities of country, through railways. Lok Nayak Jayaprakash Airport in Patna provides direct connection with Metros and some important cities. It is classified as a restricted international airport.
