OverviewIndian Institute of Technology Rajasthan is one among the new IITs established in 2008. It is located in Jodhpur, the Sun City, in the state of Rajasthan. After spending two years at the IIT Kanpur campus, IIT Rajasthan shifted to Jodhpur in 2010. Till the proposed new campus is fully functional, the institute will have its academic and administrative blocks at the MBM Engineering College situated in the city.
IIT Rajasthan currently offers undergraduate courses in three disciplines, namely Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. Teaching and research activities of the institute especially for postgraduate and Ph.D programmes are structured around the three Centres of Excellence (CoE) of the institute.
The institute's Central Library is functional in the MBM Engineering College campus. It is home to about 5000 books, several magazines and e-journals too. A Library Management Software to enable an Online Public Access Catalogue is also planned and will soon come into existence.
The institute has a Computer Centre, running on a gigabit LAN with 100 Mbps internet bandwidth. It is the nucleus of all computing facilities for students and staff. The academic area is Wi-Fi enabled.
The French Government has shown a keen interest in helping IIT Rajasthan develop into a world class research centre and academic institute, helping IIT Rajasthan force strategic links with leading French universities. IIT Rajasthan has also signed MOUs with the University of Waterloo, Canada, the University of Western Ontario, Canada, and the Universitat Rovira i Virgili, Tarragona, Spain, for students and faculty exchange programmes.
Campus LifeStudents of IIT Rajasthan are accommodated in a scenic campus, namely, the IIT Rajasthan Residential Complex. Students are accommodated in the residential flats in the campus. The campus, which is well guarded and equipped with all basic amenities required for a residential colony, also houses the faculty and staff members of the institute. The institute provides transport facility to the students for commuting between the residential complex and the institute.
The students are encouraged to participate in co-curricular activities that will help them acquire all-round development. On a regular basis, they are provided chances to hear and interact with experts from different areas. Extracurricular activities include participation in the Book Club, the Science & Technology Council, Photography Club, Sports, Music, Astronomy and Films. The Students Gymkhana takes the role of coordinating various activities that are organized by students.
The institute, though new, has already hosted several fests and is focussing on making them bigger to establish a strong culture. Taksh, the annual socio-cultural fest of IIT Rajasthan is an 'omnium-gatherum' of students from around the country. With several competitions, workshops and 'pronites', Taksh attained huge popularity in its very first year and promises to grow into a bigger fest in the years to follow. IIT Rajasthan also organises an inter-college sports festival 'Varchas'. It aims at encouraging and enhancing sportsmanship among the participants through hosting events in a variety of sports.
