Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar


Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar (IIT-BBS) is one of the eight new IITs set up by the Government of India in 2008. The Institute currently operates from its temporary campus in the heart of the city of Bhubaneswar. The Mentor Institute of IIT BBS is IIT Kharagpur.

The permanent campus of IIT Bhubaneswar will be located on a 936 acre land in a picturesque surrounding at Argul, which is about 25 km from Bhubaneswar City Center and 14 km from Biju Patnaik Airport. The master plan of the campus has been finalized and construction work is expected to commence soon. The Institute plans to move to its permanent campus by 2013.

The Institute is presently offering the following academic programmes:
-4 year B. Tech Degree programme
-Ph. D. Programme
The 4-year B. Tech. programme is offered in Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering disciplines with an intake of 40 in each. The Ph.D. programme has started from the academic session 2009-10 in the five Schools (Basic Sciences, Humanities-Social Science & Management, Electrical Sciences, Mechanical Sciences, and Infrastructure).
IIT Bhubaneswar has signed MOU with University of Edinburgh, UK and University of Western Ontario, Canada.
Merit-cum-Means scholarships are available to the students.

Campus Life

Accommodation with mess and other facilities are available for both girls and boys at the residential campus. The hostels have 24x7 Internet facility, hall library, gymnasium, common room, and other recreational facilities. Medical facility is provided to students both in the campus and in the hostels.

One of the planned cities of independent India- Bhubaneswar, is the capital of Orissa and is famous for its religious significance. An emerging IT hub and a boom in the metal and metal processing industries have made Bhubaneswar one of the fastest developing cities of India in recent years. Bhubaneswar is also categorized as a tier 2 city because of its development pace.

The city has a tropical wet and dry climate. The average temperatures range between a minimum of around 12 °C in the winter to a maximum of 40 °C to 45 °C in summer. It experiences sudden thunderstorms in April-May and monsoons from June to October.

Bhubaneswar offers various parks, theaters, temples and clubs for recreation. The Indira Gandhi Park, Nehru Park, Ekamra Park and Satsang Vihar Park provide peace and greenery. The Nandankanan Sanctuary and Debrigarh Sanctuary are a must-visit for animal lovers. Beautiful sea shores with amazing sand sculptures, the Lingaraj Temple, Mukteswar Temple and Rajarani Temple are great specimens of Indian art and culture. Apart from these, McDonalds, Cafe Coffee Day, Pizza Hut and other restaurants, shopping centres like the Forum Mart, Maruti Mall and almost all the known retail markets like the Vishal Mega marts, Big Bazar etc. are available.

Bhubaneswar is the zonal head quarters of East Coast Railway, and thus, is well connected to all the major cities of the country. The Biju Patnaik Airport, located 3 km south of the city, provides regular flights to many destinations across India like New Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai and Bangalore.
